One-Dimensional Cellular Automata Visualizer

This is a demonstration of the simple one-dimensional cellular automata described here. The behavior of the figure is entirely determined by the presence or absence of black squares (cells) in the first row across the top. To start, only the middle square is present. Subsequent rows are determined by the rule number. There are 256 different rules giving a wide variety of behaviors.

You can click on the first row to turn squares on/off and regenerate the figure. You can also change the rule number and cells size using the dropdown menus below.
